Mechanical/TPS Design Engineer responsible for detailed design, analysis, and documentation of thermal protection systems and hardware for cargo and human-rated flight vehicles.

Job Requirements

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.

  • Minimum 5+ years of direct experience in development of mechanical/electromechanical hardware and systems for launch vehicles and related systems.

  • Experience with detailed design of textile, mechanical, and electromechanical systems, subsystems, and components for thermal protection (thermal blankets, tiles, TPS hardware).

  • Ability to apply engineering principles and perform and/or assess stress, thermal, and fluid dynamics analyses to ensure fit, form, and function.

  • Ability to perform or oversee part tolerance analysis utilizing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).

  • Understanding of impact of thermal contraction/expansion from surrounding thermal environments on fit and function.

  • Strong understanding of aerospace-grade metallic and non-metallic material properties for lightweight, high-strength, high-temperature TPS design.

  • Ability to generate or support development of interface drawings for mechanical and thermal system interfaces.

  • Experience designing unique test fixtures and methods for test programs.

  • Ability to generate or support requirement specifications, requirement verification, procedures, and hazard analyses.

  • Ability to present design concepts, features, and details in tools such as PowerPoint for design gate reviews.

  • Working knowledge of manufacturing/production processes for hardware and textile products.

  • Understanding of structural and thermal analysis processes for hardware and textile development.

  • US citizenship or legal US residence (Green Card).

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge and experience in textile and/or thermal protection systems design and development, including textile fabrication methods and techniques.

  • Experience with spacecraft thermal protection systems.

  • Ability to perform CAD modeling and generate manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks or Pro/E Creo.

  • Experience with MathCAD.

  • Experience with ASME Y14.5, Y14.24, and Y14.41 drawing standards.

  • Experience with test support equipment and fixtures.

  • Familiarity with writing assembly procedures and technical reports.

  • Familiarity with thermal testing, structural testing, and life testing.

  • Experience using LabVIEW.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed design of textile, mechanical, and electromechanical systems and components used for thermal protection on cargo and human-rated flight vehicles.

  • Develop TPS solutions (thermal blankets, tiles, interfacing hardware) to protect launch vehicle components and structures from launch, flight, and re-entry environments.

  • Apply engineering knowledge to perform and/or assess stress, thermal, and fluid dynamics analyses to validate design performance.

  • Perform or oversee tolerance analysis using GD&T, accounting for thermal expansion and contraction to ensure proper fit and function.

  • Maintain high technical standards for test setups, test operations, development setups, documentation, and closeout activities.

  • Generate and support development of interface drawings that define detailed mechanical and thermal system interfaces.

  • Design unique test fixtures and methods to support validation and qualification testing.

  • Develop and support requirement specifications, requirement verification, procedures, and hazard analyses for assigned hardware and systems.

  • Prepare and deliver design presentations at design gate reviews, demonstrating performance, producibility, affordability, and requirements compliance.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Design/Drafting, Analysis, Production, Quality Assurance, Health and Safety, Project/Program Management, and Accounting/Finance.

  • Support manufacturing and production activities for hardware and textile products, ensuring designs are compatible with production processes.

  • Support structural and thermal analysis activities to ensure designs withstand anticipated environments and maintain fit, form, and function.
