Sr Optical Engineer
Builds, aligns, tests, deploys, and supports advanced optical instruments and systems for aerospace and space applications.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in optical engineering, optical sciences, physics, or a related technical discipline
- Hands-on laboratory experience assembling and aligning complex optical systems
- Knowledge of optical theory and optical system design principles
- Experience designing and laying out optical systems using Zemax
- Experience building optical systems and instrumentation to engineering requirements and specifications
- Experience documenting optical alignment, test methods, results, and system performance
- Ability to analyze wavefront error, stray light, tolerance sensitivity, and optical performance
- Ability to travel approximately 10% for system deployment, field support, and customer-site activities
- United States citizenship
- Ability to pass a required background investigation
Preferred Skills
- Master’s degree in optical engineering, optical sciences, physics, or a related field
- Experience with adaptive optics systems
- Experience assembling and aligning optical breadboards
- Laser communications system experience
- Experience with benchtop or field-deployed laser systems
- Experience using autocollimators
- Experience using alignment telescopes
- Experience using interferometers
- Experience supporting aerospace or space optical systems
- Experience commissioning optical systems at customer locations
- Experience supporting deployed system upgrades and field repairs
- Active United States security clearance or eligibility to obtain one
Job Responsibilities
- Assemble advanced optical systems and related instrumentation
- Align optical components, subsystems, and complete systems
- Test optical components and systems against engineering requirements
- Develop and execute component-level, subsystem-level, and system-level test procedures
- Document optical alignment processes, test configurations, results, and acceptance criteria
- Analyze optical-system performance using Zemax or comparable professional optical-design software
- Evaluate wavefront error, stray light, tolerances, and sensitivity to component variation
- Compare analytical and test results with system requirements
- Support optical-system concepts, requirements development, design, build, alignment, testing, and commissioning
- Design and assemble optical breadboards and laboratory test configurations
- Identify and select optical components for system integration
- Research component availability and technical specifications
- Coordinate with optical-component vendors regarding product selection and technical requirements
- Develop design documentation, operating specifications, test reports, and technical briefings
- Improve existing optical products, assembly processes, test procedures, and manufacturing documentation
- Deploy and commission optical systems at customer sites
- Support fielded-system troubleshooting, maintenance, upgrades, and performance verification
- Prepare technical material for project reviews, customer briefings, and system-delivery activities
Pay Details: $100,000.00 to $130,000.00 per year
