Performs MIG repair welding, oxy-fuel cutting, fitting, and field repairs on heavy steel equipment and materials in scrap, recycling, fabrication, and industrial environments.

Job Requirements

  • 3+ years of welding experience in a scrap yard, recycling facility, heavy equipment repair operation, or fabrication shop.
  • Experience with MIG/GMAW repair welding on heavy steel.
  • Experience using oxy-fuel torches for cutting, sizing heavy material, beveling, and preheating.
  • Experience welding dirty, rusty, painted, and varying-thickness steel.
  • Experience performing out-of-position and field welding.
  • Ability to perform welding repairs on equipment and materials at ground level and in non-bench environments.
  • Experience fitting and tack welding heavy steel sections.
  • Ability to lay out repairs and determine appropriate weld sequences without relying on fabrication prints.
  • Knowledge of visual weld inspection and common weld discontinuities.

Preferred Skills

  • Heavy equipment repair welding experience.
  • Scrap yard or recycling industry welding experience.
  • Heavy fabrication experience.
  • Experience repairing structural components and heavy industrial equipment.
  • Experience preparing damaged steel for welding using cutting, beveling, and preheating techniques.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform MIG/GMAW repair welding on heavy steel equipment, components, and structures.
  • Use oxy-fuel cutting equipment to size heavy scrap and separate damaged or unwanted material.
  • Cut, bevel, and preheat steel in preparation for welding and repair.
  • Weld material with rust, paint, contamination, and varying thicknesses as required by repair conditions.
  • Perform flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead, and other out-of-position welds as required.
  • Complete field repairs directly on equipment and heavy components.
  • Fit and tack steel sections prior to final welding.
  • Lay out repair areas and establish weld sequences based on equipment condition and repair requirements.
  • Perform visual inspection of completed welds.
  • Identify weld discontinuities and correct unacceptable weld conditions before equipment is returned to service.


Pay Details: $23.00 to $27.00 per hour
