Automation Engineer
Summary: Leads the electrical design, automation development, equipment procurement, installation, commissioning, and startup of capital projects within an industrial manufacturing environment.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in electromechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related technical field
- Equivalent technical education and relevant engineering experience may be considered
- Minimum of 2–4 years of electrical, controls, automation, or industrial engineering experience
- Experience developing electrical and controls system designs using CAD tools
- Experience programming programmable logic controllers
- Experience with Ladder Logic, Structured Text, or GRAFCET programming
- Experience with variable-frequency drives and motion-control systems
- Experience configuring and programming human-machine interfaces
- Experience with industrial control-system networks and communication protocols
- Experience developing engineering estimates, technical schedules, and project documentation
- Experience supporting equipment installation, commissioning, startup, and acceptance
- Ability to travel approximately 5% domestically, with occasional international travel
- Availability to support weekend, holiday, shutdown, installation, and startup schedules as required
Preferred Skills
- 4–6 years of engineering experience
- Experience with SEE Electrical or comparable electrical design software
- Experience with Rockwell PLC hardware and programming software
- Experience with Siemens automation systems
- Experience with Control Techniques, SEW MOVIMOT, or Rockwell drive systems
- Experience with PanelView HMIs and FactoryTalk View Machine Edition Studio
- Knowledge of Data Highway Plus, ControlNet, and industrial Ethernet protocols
- Experience integrating controls systems with computer databases
- Experience leading project teams or managing engineering projects
- Experience configuring industrial vision systems for measurement or defect detection
- Experience with Cognex, Keyence, Adept, Bytewise, or Gocator vision systems
- Experience configuring or integrating Fanuc or ABB robotic systems
- Experience with tire manufacturing processes, including material preparation, tire building, curing, and after-cure operations
- Experience managing equipment suppliers and contract engineering resources
- Experience conducting equipment safety and ergonomic risk assessments
Job Responsibilities
- Develop detailed electrical designs and automation programs for capital projects
- Coordinate electrical and automation deliverables across engineering disciplines
- Support preliminary studies for electrical, automation, deployment, and development projects
- Perform equipment design studies and evaluate technical alternatives
- Develop estimates for equipment, installation labor, engineering, startup, and travel costs
- Track project expenditures and manage actual costs against approved estimates
- Develop and maintain schedules covering design, procurement, installation, startup, and qualification
- Create equipment specifications and technical documentation for requests for quotation
- Support supplier selection, purchase-order placement, and equipment procurement activities
- Monitor supplier design, fabrication, testing, and delivery progress
- Coordinate supplier equipment inspections and acceptance activities
- Manage on-site equipment reception, installation, commissioning, startup, and production ramp-up
- Establish and track equipment acceptance criteria with plant engineering and operations teams
- Program and configure PLCs, HMIs, drives, motion controls, networks, and related automation equipment
- Integrate automation systems with industrial networks, devices, and databases
- Coordinate equipment safety and ergonomic risk assessments
- Provide technical direction to contract engineering firms and equipment suppliers
- Provide system documentation, training, and backup support to plant maintenance teams
- Participate in capital equipment projects and plant modifications from initial design through final acceptance
- Support troubleshooting during installation, commissioning, and startup
- Support project installations and plant shutdown work occurring on weekends or holidays
- Maintain engineering drawings, equipment specifications, test records, schedules, and commissioning documentation
Pay Details: $50.00 to $60.00 per hour
