Project Engineer – Materials Technology (Rubber/Elastomer Formulation)
Materials technology product development engineering role focused on rubber and elastomer compound formulation, polymer material testing, product commercialization, and non-metallic component development.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
- 2+ years of hands-on rubber or elastomer compound formulation and development experience
- Experience with rubber and elastomeric materials, including EPDM, nitrile, silicone, or related polymers
- Experience selecting and evaluating curing systems, fillers, and additives for rubber compounds
- Experience with rubber molding processes, including compression molding, transfer molding, or injection molding
- Knowledge of polymeric material testing and failure analysis
- Knowledge of rubber-specific test methods, including Mooney viscosity, cure rheometry, compression set, and durometer hardness
- Experience with instrumental analysis of chemicals and polymers
- Experience with FTIR, DMA, DSC, TGA, tensile testing, Mooney viscosity, or cure rheometry
- Experience supporting product development from concept through steady-state production
- Experience with non-metallic sub-assembly or product testing and validation
- Experience troubleshooting rubber molding processes and compound-related defects
- Experience solving material, design, tolerance, tooling, or production issues
- Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project
- Ability to travel globally up to 25%

- Composite, coating, or metallic alloy materials knowledge

Responsibilities
- Develop and commercialize products using advanced materials
- Formulate and compound rubber and elastomeric materials to meet customer specifications
- Support development of thermoplastics, thermosets, composites, coatings, and metallic alloys used in product development
- Develop new and revised products, materials, and components
- Generate product and material concepts
- Develop design ideas to satisfy product concepts and requirements
- Create concept models through drawings or prototype hardware
- Work with marketing and sales teams to refine concepts based on customer requirements
- Develop initial design cost estimates
- Prepare project and procurement authorization documentation
- Facilitate multi-department testing and validation of non-metallic sub-assemblies and products
- Select and evaluate curing systems, fillers, and additives for rubber compounds
- Troubleshoot rubber molding processes
- Resolve compound-related defects
- Participate in supplier selection for materials, tooling, or production support
- Support prototyping activities
- Test products and materials against thermal, mechanical, and chemical requirements
- Analyze material performance and failure modes
- Lead design reviews to verify customer and performance requirements
- Review detailed cost estimates
- Resolve tolerance issues during development and production
- Participate in tooling selection and tooling approval based on sample results
- Evaluate pilot production runs
- Support problem solving during pilot production and commercialization
- Prepare and approve technical literature
- Support education and training related to new products
Pay Details: $100,000.00 to $130,000.00 per year
